The GEM project is positioned to ensure that all supported businesses/interventions comply with the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Safeguard Policies, and the regulations and procedures of the Federal Ministry of Environment.
The World Bank has in place ten (10) Operational Policies (OP) designed to ensure that all supported interventions are economically, financially, socially and environmentally sound.
The GEM Project triggers the Operational Policies on:
• Environmental Assessment (OP/BP 4.01),
• Involuntary Resettlement (OP/BP 4.12), and
• Pest Management (OP/BP 4.09)
The Federal Ministry of Environment also has a number of policies, which addresses environmental issues in Nigeria.
The objectives of these policies, both from the World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Environment, are to prevent and mitigate undue harm to people and their environment in a development process.
A Good Practice Guidance document and Animation videos on environment and social best recommendations to business owners supported by the GEM Project are provided, to ensure compliances with regulators, and deliver opportunities to grow businesses in a sustainable manner.
